a couple here in the building just had a baby. they saw a woman they know who asked "is that [the baby]?" clearly it was, but the parents replied in the affirmative anyway. the woman went on to say "aww, he's so cute." and then looked at him.
you read that right, said he was cute, then looked at him.
what is it in our society that we have to tell people their baby is cute? in all honesty, most babies are not cute. they're quite ugly. for the first week or two they look like they've just got out of a 9 month shower and forgot to dry off. they're wrinkly and stuff hasn't opened yet.
they don't actually start looking like anything, let alone a cute person, until at least 6 months. and at 6 months, they very well may be an ugly baby. it happens. not all babies are cute just because they are babies.
i admit i once said a baby was cute. in fact i said she was beautiful. when my niece was born, i got a text with a picture of a baby. i didn't know who the text was from other than it's area code (which was virginia and i could safely assume it was a picture of my niece). had it been my sister or mother or father i'm certain i'd of said something else. on the off chance it was a random relative of my bro in law i didn't want them thinking that i hate my niece.
in the end she did turn out to be a pretty cute kid. she's incredibly photogenic. i wish i turned out to look half as good in photos as my niece does.
